Stairs and a Daschund

Hello,
My family is planning on purchasing a Dacshund as a birthday present for a younger sibling. However, we have a multiple level house and are afraid that the constant going up and down stairs will cause spinal problems. Is this true? And if so, is there any way we can make our new dog less likely to become injured in the long term? Thank you for your time.

Dachshunds can be prone to back problems.  You can always put up a baby gate on the stairs if there are very many and be prepared to have to carry up and down if there is any hint of issues (sometimes I have to carry mine and my blind one is never allowed to go up and down them) and use baby gates.  I have baby gates at top and bottom.
