Question
QUESTION: can you breed a 5 yr old dachshund after her 10th heat?

ANSWER: The answer is yes although you should consider why you would to breed an older dog that has never been bred.  Most reputable breeders are thinking of retiring dogs from breeding at age 5 - 6 years old.  At 7 they are considered seniors.  In human years, the dog is about 36 - 40 years old at that age.  There is also the fact that there are a lot of homeless dachshunds out there who need someone to love and care for them.  I would suggest that unless she is a champion, do you really want to breed her or get her spayed?  She will live a healthier and happier life if spayed and there are no guarantees she will get pregnant and be able to carry the babies full term to a healthy birth.  I know that it might not be an easy decision but consider all factors before deciding to breed her.  Hope that helps.

QUESTION: Thank you Cindy. I have to say I did call the old owner of my dachshund here and she finally told me the dog is NOT 5 yrs old she is 4 yrs old and she had only gone into heat 2 times when she had my dachshund here. I hate finding these things out after having the dog for little over 3 months now. But yes I would like to breed her for her last time here. Can you help me on this part as well, please?

Answer
Not sure what type of help you are looking for?  Generally, having puppies can be expensive.  You need to have the mom vetted, then when they are born they need to go to the vet soon after to be checked.  Then they will need shots, etc.  You should also make sure you know the background of all dogs - male and female - you are breeding so that you do not get any genetic problems.  Typically, breeders know the lineage (they have been in their kennels) or have DNA testing done.  You might want to get your dog vetted before breeding so that you know she is healthy and can have a good pregnancy.  Especially if she is 4 going on 5 and never been bred.  Not sure what you mean by "only gone into heat 2 times when she had my dachshund.."  I hope you are not considering breeding your dog to another dog with any relationship to yours.  Just not sure what you are saying.  Let me know what I can answer and I will try to help, but I have to be honest, breeding is not something I love - I have had a couple of breedings and have had several pregnant dogs (through rescue - the breedings were an accident) and it breaks my heart to see so many in need while puppies come along that do not promote the breed (not a good match and not of quality bloodlines) and are bought because they are cute and then so often are used to replace older dogs.  I cannot tell you how many times people have gotten rid of an older dog and gotten a new puppy.  It is so sad.  The older ones are the best pets ever.  It is one reason I will not breed - I could not stand the thought that a puppy of mine could end up like the older ones.  But I love puppies too!  So many people do not realize they grow fast and they are a forever commitment.  Enough - I will get off my box!
