Urinating more than normal and on carpet

Question
I have a 3 1/2 year old mini dachshund who has always used a puppy pad until we got him trained to go outside.  We still keep a puppy pad out in case he needs to go while we are not at home or during the night.  Recently he has started peeing on the carpet in our bedroom and anywhere else, but the pad.  I noticed 7 spots in a 6 hour period where he peed.  He normally pees 3-4 times a day.  His urinating is becoming excessive and not sure if I need to take him to the vet.  He uses the pad if we are home (asleep) so he knows he will get in trouble if he doesn't.  What should I do?

Answer
I would go to the vet.  Peeing more than normal can be a sign of many things.  Is he neutered?  That makes a difference too.  You will have to clean really well to get the scent out after you figure out what is going on so he does not keep going there.  Sometimes they can pee is express unhappiness as well.  Start with having him checked for problems like a bladder infection.
