trying to take ball or toy from mini-doxies mouth

19 17:08:18

Question
The 7 pound love-of-our-life mini-doxie (female)is adorable in
every way except one. Whenever we try to take a toy or her tennis
ball (so we can throw it again)from her mouth, she turns into the
scariest snarling, growling, teeth-bared "wolf". And don't try
to pick her up then either. If a finger gets too close, it will
get bitten hard enough to draw blood.

She's 2 1/2 yrs old - too late for advice on how to try to break
this bad habit?

Answer
It is never too late and this is something you want to stop.  I can think of several things you can try.  Ignore her when she has a toy, even if she wants attention or acts like she wants you to throw the ball.  Put a halter on her, leave it on, and pick her up by the halter and put her in a pen or crate when she gets nasty and be firm when you tell her bad girl.  I have a nasty dog and his halter is how I can pick him up to do something with him.  He has gotten so much better.  You also try giving her some rescue remedy before she gets a toy to see if it lessens her anxiety over the toy.  Don't give her any toys - take them up while she sleeps.  You can try to giver her a treat to see if she will drop the ball and then let you have it.  Do not try to take the toy or ball from her.  Your best bet is to not give her any toys or a ball and try to play with it and her - you do not want her to get nasty or get worse.  Hope it helps.
