HOW OFTEN WILL MY DOG BE IN HEAT

my pit is about 10 months, she's in her first heat. I didnt know it at first, I saw the swelling and still didn't realize it. Is this swelling painful for her? Will this happen every month. How long does it last.

The heat cycle usually last 21 days from the first day you see any signs of red vaginal discharge.  She can get pregnant from the 8th through the 14th day, but that's not set in stone.

The cycle will reoccur usually every 6 months. Some females vary as much as a month or so early or 2-3 months later. The swelling isn't painfull, just uncomfortable.

I suggest that after she's finished with this cycle, that you have her spayed and you won't have to deal with this ever again. You have a wonderful, healthy companion for a very long time.
