Question
Hi, My husband and I just brought home an American Bulldog today who was said to be 15 wks.(female)
We have an Olde English Bulldogge(male)almost 9months. he is not fixed.(we dont plan on breeding)
I wanted a female because I thought they wouldnt be as prone to fight or be aggressive towards one another.  However, our olde, was very excited to see her and wanted to play, and she has been very laid back and calm. she growled and bared her teeth at him earlier and I corrected her right away and she stopped.  My question is, what is the best way to correct this behavior, I have 2 children and I dont think any aggression is acceptable. I'm hoping this is just perhaps an anxiety issue from all the newness and all.
Any suggestions?
thanks a bunch

Answer
First of all, "just brought home" translates to puppy freaked out by overly exuberant male in the house! Growling and snapping at him is perfectly natural and a way of letting him know that his advances aren't wanted at this time.  She's just a baby and he's just a big dufus.

Now, unless you want his behavior to get worse, and it will, I would get him neutered yesterday. Then, as soon as possible, get her spayed, and life will be harmonious for all.

In the meantime, she's not the one you need to be disciplining, it's him.  If he antagonizes her, just put her away in her crate to relax and have some quiet time.  She's needs to make the new home adjustment without having to defend herself constantly. This will work itself out in a couple of weeks probably, but make that appointment to have him neutered right away.

Good luck.
