Eye so bloodshot it looks brown

Question
Yet another concern:

I wrote earlier about our 19 month old adopted bulldog, Emma. Today as I was cleaning under her eye, I realized one eye which I thought was just uneven in that it does  not have white around it is actually so bloodshot the white looks brown. I have a vet appointment for a well dog check I made as soon as brought her home next week but would like some idea of what it might be or what I can do for her. Also, since this is the first time I've been to this vet (or any vet for years, we haven't owned an animal for a while), I don't know how good he is with bulldogs and want to know in advance what might be causing this. I did find something called exposure keratopathy that it might be as that eye seems a little more watery. The other eye is just fine. She does not paw at the red eye or seem to be in pain, but I have read that bulldogs are very stoic. Now that I've seen this I am really worried and feel awful for not noticing it before. She also seems to have good vision in both eyes. Her appointment is not until Tuesday, should I try to get her an emergency appointment?

Thanks,

Lisa

Answer
It's probably nothing to worry about. I suspect it might be caused by a slight case of entropion which may be irritating the eye, but not causing enough discomfort for the dog to show any signs.  You can try a few drops of Visine and see if it "gets the red out". This isn't an emergency situation.

You need to ask your new vet how many Bulldog clients he has and if there's not many, how comfortable is he working on one. Some will flat out say "I don't know that much" but they're rare. Vets tend to know everything about everything.

Your best reference is another Bulldog owner.
