Olde English female fixated on Toddler

Question
Hi, Two months ago we adopted a female year and a half old Olde English
Bulldogge. She's largely well behaved and gets along well with our staf terrier
and the human family (mom, dad, two young boys). She is not aggressive or
out of line.

But the dog does fixate on the actions of our 2 year old son. The dog follows
him around very closely from room to room and is ever watchful. Our 4 year
old son does not elicit any of this interest from the dog.

I do not fear any type of unpredictable behavior from the bulldog toward our
youngest, but do find the fixation somewhat disconcerting.

Any theories on what could be happening here? Will the behavior mellow with
time?

PS: I've read your suggestions to neuter male dogs to alter behavior. Does
spaying females change their actions similarly? Our dog was scheduled for
spaying last week but went into heat and we now have to wait a couple
months before having the procedure.

Thank you!

Answer
The may have never been exposed to small children and is just curious. Or she could be just watchful of her. I'm sure once the child gets older the fixation will subside.

However, with the dog in heat, I would keep the little one away from her. On rare occasions females can become aggressive during their cycle and it happens in the blink of an eye.

Spaying is a great idea and the sooner the better. This should solve all your problems.
