Question
QUESTION: Our 2 1/2 year old English Bulldog delivered her 1st litter of 7 puppies on 4/16/09 by C-Section.  So far things have been going smoothly.  Last night I had to give one of the pups a supplemental bottle.  When I returned the pup to the litter everything was ok.  Then for some unknown reason my female started growling at the puppies and acting very aggressive. When we put them away for the evening she was back to her old self.  However this morning after weighing the puppies & returning them to their space, my female started growling again and acted very aggressive.  I separated her from the litter but I am very concerned on her behavior & if she will harm the pups.  My vet asked if I had washed the pups which I had not and really didn't have a reason for this behavior.  Can you help?

ANSWER: Wow, I am not a breeder but I wonder if she is in any discomfort with the pups nursing?  Also, she need more food right now - how about giving her some home cooking for the next few days...JUST for mom!
**cook up some white chicken breast and cooked yams or sweet potato for momma bullie.  She does require x-ray nutrition right now..
Also, you can place a warm compress on her nipples a few times per day -

I bet with a little more attention she may feel better and be able to DEAL with the little ones!

Hope this helps you!

BEST wishes on the NEW gang!!!

QUESTION: I took her into see the vet this morning. He gave her an injection of oxytocin, & suggested that she have one in the am/pm for the next 3 days.  As far as her diet she is on Royal Canin Bulldog Formula. We have also been supplementing that with pumpkin & yogurt she was having some diarrhea. I am just concerned for her as well as the puppies.  That is not a typical behavior for her.  Thanks for your help!

Ask the Pet Nurse

Well, I guess the vet did think she was in some discomfort....
Can you add some SoJo to her diet?  They sell SoJO at many pet stores or they deliver to your door very quick...
free shipping to any USA door step.
I bet she would love the SoJO

Also, MOM can start on the NuVET Plus Supplements - many breeders have mom on this and then the PUPs can start on the Powder at 6 weeks.
It is an immue system booster and healer... Check out NuVET here:
http://www.nuvet.com/81098
To pop MOM onto the NuVET it would be only .60 cents per day -
She would need 1 of the NuVET wafer treats daily...

Tell them Pet Nurse Marie sent you and use order code 81098 / ask the for the 15% off program.

I hope mom feels better soon...
The Hormone shot should help.
