Question
QUESTION: I recently purchased a 3 month old, going on 4 months Victorian/English bulldog mix. He had a runny nose and coughing/hacking the second night . I figured it was kennel cough so I took him to the vet the following day. The vet diagnosed him with pneumonia. he's been at the vet for 4 days now on antibiotics and a nebulizing cage, they call me with updates everyday. he's not getting any worse and has a appetite. my question is should I return the bully back to the breeder or will the pup beat out the pneumonia?? how long is the recovery process of pneumonia if i choose to keep him ? the vet said I should be able to take him home today. last, have you heard of nzymes oxi-drops? It claims it would help clear pneumonia, It seems like a miracle drug for all illnesses in pets and humans.
ANSWER: If this puppy came to you sick, I would send him back or at least get the breeder to pay your vet bills. This is not something he just picked up enroute to you. If you want to keep the puppy, then see if you can get some type of reimbursement. If you didn't get a health guarantee on the puppy, you may be out of luck but even the worse of breeders usually offer a 48 hr. one.

As for the Oxi-drops? Never heard of them and there is no such thing as a miracle drug for pneumonia. If you want to give the puppy something to boost his immune system once he's well, like echinachia and golden seal, that's fine.

You have to wonder #1 what type of environment did this puppy live in and #2 what type of breeder would sell a sick puppy? It's the law that any puppy sold has to have a health certificate.  Did he come with one?

QUESTION: I do have a health guarantee and a certificate of health, the vet bills are covered as long as I go to the breeders vet (which i did) for up to 2 weeks. The vet just called me and said they would like to hold him one more day.

With the vet bills being paid up to 2 weeks from purchasing date. With you expert opinion: with the vet bills being paid up to two weeks is it worth keeping the pup? or will he be in and out of the vet for months to come related to his pneumonia leaving me with extensive bills to pay myself?

As most people would do, I checked online to find anything that can help me with my pups pneumonia and give me piece of mind, and that nzymes kept coming up everywhere and even dog health stores were selling it also. I was skeptical that's why I asked you if you heard of it before, it didn't only claim to get rid of pneumonia, but almost everything else a pet can get ....but if you never heard of it then I will NOT give it a try . thanks again

Answer
Whether you return the puppy or not is ultimately your decision. However, if it was me, he'd go back to the breeder. If you're attached to him, you may be willing to take your chances that he will come out of this ok and be healthy in the future.

In my opinion, a puppy who has had this many issues at such an early age isn't going to live a long, healthy life.
