Question

drago
Hi, i have a 1yr old boxer male he is 50lbs, he eats 2 times a day with 2 1/2 cups of food per meal. i bought him in southern missouri and when i meet the breeders they wanted to meet at walmart and didnt bring the parents, they said that the mom was 55lbs and the dad was 70lbs. he was the biggest of the bunch at 8 weeks being 9lbs, also i believe it was a puppy mill by the not wanting to meet at the house plus them saying they have 5other breeds at the farm also. just wanting to know if you think he will get bigger than his 20inch withers and 50lb frame. thank you.

Answer
Generally speaking Boxers grow "up" the first year and "out" the second and third.  If he's only 20 inches at the withers, he is smaller than average, but he doesn't look too thin in the photo.  He may gain some height still, but I wouldn't expect more than an inch or so.  He will gain weight over the next couple of years, and his chest will drop and his ribs spring, as he matures.  It is better for him, health-wise, to be slightly too thin as opposed to slightly too fat; his hips and spine should not be visible, but he should have a defined tuck-up from the side and waist from the top, and you should just see the outline of the last two or three ribs.

Good luck!!
