Beagles and fences

Question
I have a beagle (Rosie) that will be 2 in August. I have a big, fenced backyard, but the ground is very soft in parts. She keeps digging her way out. My parents and I have patched all of the holes as we find them. I am thinking about adding an underground fence right next to the wood fence to help keep her in the yard and off the tie-down so she can have more room to play. In addition, we are about to add a new puppy into the family -- not another beagle but a rescued momma dog that thanked us with puppies. The new dog is going to be a lot bigger than Rosie, and I did not want to keep Rosie tied up or crated and let the other dog run free in the backyard. Is it worth the expense or should I either add more wood to the bottom of the fence or put in a large kennel and use Quickrete to eliminate the ability to dig out? Thanks!

Answer
Hi, well I am not a fence builder but in my opinion if she is already a digger you must do the ultimate then to foil her attempts so it sounds like the Quickrete is best. Beagles are notorious escape artists so go further than you think you need :).   Often having shrubs etc in front of the fence make this harder but if your yard is very large that is a lot of shrubs to plant! Is there any other way after your do the concrete to block the most vulnerable areas? maybe laying bricks two wide along the line after you concrete it so if she digs she is at least that far away from the fenceline? You may need to look into an invisable electric fence also as well as concreting the posts

Personally I wouldnt be taking on another dog until you have this figured out because one escape artist often teaches a new one to follow suit.

Having a dog out on a tie down is not recommended for any longer than about 10 mionutes at a time. It can make them agitated, protective and eventually aggressive. If you are adding another dog and Rosie cannot get away by running she could become agressive to the other dog or to people. Try to fix the fence deal before anything else occurs to change the pack dynamics.
