Training a Beagle for Invisible Fence

Question
I am considering adopting an adult male beagle from the shelter.  He appears to have a sweet disposition.  I have read, however, that beagles can be stubborn and difficult to train.  I have a dog already (Jack Russell mix) who does fantastically with our Invisible Fence.  I am wondering, do you think it will be difficult to train a beagle for the Invisible Fence?

Answer
Hello Jackie!
I'm going to honest. Beagles are one of the hardest breeds of dogs to train. Its hereditary. Does it mean they can't be trained? Absolutely not! Beagles are used for several different things from house pet, to guard dog, to fantastic hunters, and trackers. What they do is so complex they don't catch on as quickly. Beagles do respond well to the invisible fence. My cousin has a beagle and use a invisible fence and Monty (the beagle) caught on very fast. On the other hand,Invisible fences are not sufficient for a beagle's safety. Beagles are very stubborn dogs, and they often consider that it's worth a zap to get out and get at what they want to explore. It only takes once for them to do this and put themselves in a life-or-death situation. It's just not worth taking a chance. The other (big) problem with invisible fences is that even if they do keep your dog inside, they don't protect your beagle from other animals or people coming in! But it all depends on how much time you want to spend training, or to get a professional trainer to train him. I thought about a invisible fence for my beagle when I got her, which she was a puppy but after buying the fence, installation, and a trainer to assure that my dog would stay in there it was just about the same to put up a actual fence that you know they will stay in. I don't want to down the invisible fence, but the beagle is naturally a stubborn and arrogant dog and they always want to know more, they are the kind of dog that would take the zap and get out there in the world. Get a estimation at a lowes or local hardware store on putting a actual fence up before you try the invisible fence. If you need anymore help please don't hesitate to ask I would be glad to help. Good luck and I hope for the best. Congratulations on your new beagle!
