Question
Help! We just adopted a beagle from someone.  He has been so sweet I am worried something must be wrong!  I work from home on a computer all day and he just sleeps at my feet except when I make him get up and go outside at lunch.  When my two kids come home at they play fetch, walk around etc with him then he goes into a crate all night- 1000pm-530am/600am- Is this too much sleep for a puppy? When he is awake he will play like a puppy but does not even jump on people and listens when we say no
Also we have a pool and while he hangs with the kids when they are out in it he does not go in- Can beagles swim if he accidently goes in?
Finally what is normal for him to eat?  He is eating less than a cup of food a day- but does chew on his rawhides

Answer
Hello Ginger!
Its funny you seem scare when in all actuallity you seem to have a really great dog. A puppy can never have to much sleep. But don't let him sleep to much during the day or he will get his days and nights mixed up which is sleeping during the day and playing at night and you don't want that. All dogs can swim (mostly), unless they have a deformaty. Beagles love the water. They are great swimmers. Just watch him his first swim just to be safe, but he should be fine. I would just make sure he has a way to get out like steps. He should be eatting between one to two cups a day defending on the type of food you feed him. Great brands are blue buffalo, and nutro are great brands which you would only have to feed him once a day and a cup a portion. Other brands like purina, beneful, and gravy train you would want to feed them one and a half to two cups. Beagle can become obese easily, its hereditary, so just watch him. Let him chew so rawhides so he won't get interested in the carpet, couch or plants. You seem to have a great beagle, be thankful beacause what you are scared of other people would kill to have. If you need anything else please don't hesitate to ask. Good luck and I hope for the best!
