My beagle is scratching himself raw

Question
Hi - Hope you can offer some help.  I have a 6 year old beagle that I got when his owner passed.  He has had allergies his entire life, and is also overweight (around 55 lbs).  He has hot spots on and near his tail that were raw and bleeding this am.  I used sulfadene shampoo and topical liquid on him, and also antibiotic cream.
He gets 4 benedryl a day per the vet, but he's miserable.  He's on Iams Lamb & rice food.   Thanks for any help!

Answer
Hello Annie,
Right of the bat I'm not sure what your question is stated in your question form to me, but I am here to help and I will do what I can with what I have. I think a lot of his problems would be solved if he was at a decent weight which is 25-30 pounds. Which is easy with a good exercise plan and a change of food. Science diet would be the best food to pick. It sounds like the poor thing is miserable. I suspect the benedryl is not helping him lose weight if not making him gain it. I don't know or can't see the condition of the hot spots that would have to be left to his VET that knows his full condition. If he said use sulfadene shampoo and topical liquid then that would be best. What kind of climate do you live around? If you can answer me that question I could improvise on some things. I hope the best and please PLEASE if you need anymore help please don't hesitate to e-mail me back. Best wishes to you and your beagle.
