Question
Hi 4 paws!
I have a 2 1/2 yr. old beagle with an authority problem.  Actually, my beagle has an owner with an authority assertiveness problem!  LOL!  When he gets into something he shouldn't and I try to take it away from him, he becomes a crazed wolf and bites!  Obviously, he thinks he's the boss.  Seriously, can I turn this around?  I don't like fearing my own dog.

Sincerely,
Karen K.

Answer
Hi Karen, thanks for wiritng to me about this. Yes, you do have a problem on your hands. But all is not lost, it can be turned around. You must quickly establish yourself as the ALPHA. The best way to do this is through obedience classes. I would enroll ASAP! Because of the training process you will be able to establish yourself as the boss. Even if you have taken him in the past, he obviously didn't get it! His role in life is to please and obey you. What he is displaying is called food aggression and it is definately  dominance related. If left unchecked it can escalate into a much worse situation where someone (human) may end up getting bit in the end.
BIG CAUTION NOTE: DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT use any type of punitive measures or disciplines to try and curb this. It will make him more aggressive.
At the same time begin to use positive reinforcement for times when he does things right. Lavish praise and treats are the rewards of good behavior.  It is not enough however to just do this, the classes are imperative!
Good luck and feel free to check back anytime!
