House breaking a 5-6 year old beagle

Question
We have just adopted a beagle from our local spca. We have had her a month now. She is already fixed and they think she is 5 to 6 years old. Her previous owners got rid of her because they couldn't house break her. She is a wonderful dog with a great disposition and our children adore her. We will take her outside and she will do #1 and or #2 and we will reward her with a treat, but she still will come back in the house and go on the carpet. We put her in a crate when we are gone and she will not go in it. Aside from the house breaking, I have no complaints about her at all, so I don't want to get rid of her. We are just frustrated and could use any tips you could give us. Thanks.

Answer
Hello Scott!
I want to apologize for me taking so long, I had to replace my hard drive in my computer and took longer than I thought it would. Look into her having bladder problems such as a urinary tract infection. Also get the puppy training pads, I do understand she isn't a puppy but the work miracles. Set them in the place she keeps having her accidents then after a couple days slowly move it to the door the actually take a pad outside with you. I did that with my beagle and she became trained at about seven months. Beagles are very hard dogs to train so please don't get discouraged. Look into a bladder problem with her VET. Because she understands she is supposed to go outside and when they have problems like that they go in random and the WRONG places. Its good to praise her with a treat when she is good and gets in correct, but it is also vital to scold when she has a accident. When she messes up go to her with a firm voice and say NO! and point your index finger at her. If things like this don't work look into getting her professinally trained. In her past by her being abandonded my not being able to be trained it may not be a bad idea for a professional to do it. You sound like a good pet owner for caring so much. The previous owner shouldn't have gave up on the dog. Good luck and I hope for the best if you need anything else please don't hesitate to ask.
