Question
hi, I have a beagle that is about 2 years old that has recently been refusing to get in his kennel in the morning before I leave for work.  my fiance and I recently moved his kennel into the spare bedroom (it used to be in the main room) and it seems that this problem started shortly after that.  he will listen to my fiance (very reluctantly) when he is told to get in his kennel but when I ask him to, he runs around and howls at me for several minutes which is very frustrating.  I greatly appreciate your help resolving this issue.

Answer
Hello Whitney!
I don't think that the sudden change of the kennel is posing a real problem. Every dog will have to deal with change, and your beagle is old enough to understand when to get into the kennel. As for him not listening to you, but to your fiance. Its seems your fiance may be the disciplinary figure and you may want to love on your dog more than discipline him, which is fine. Or, the dog may be frightened at your fiance maybe because he is bigger or his voice is deeper. Try this, when you want the beagle to go into the kennel have your fiance right there beside your for a couple of weeks. Point your index finger and say "go into the kennel". Beagles love to play and procrastinate so I wouldn't worry. If things don't even out I would move the kennel back into a more social spot, where he can be around people and other things. Also when you are the one that tells him to go into his kennel give him a treat and maybe a toy to play with. Its hard but to a certain extent you need to scold him and tell him you mean business when he doesn't enter. As well as praising him when he does go in. Good luck and don't hesitate to ask if you need more help. I hope for the best.
