Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I recently got a beagle that is 10 weeks old.  I am trying to Crate train Myles at Night.  The 1st night he did okay, but last night he barked non-stop for 3 hours.  I recently started using a squirt bottle when i tell him no to stop, but the issue is that my girls are there wed-thurs and I cant have Myles barking all night.  The vet said to just leave him and he should stop but after 3 hours I am a bit skeptical... I want to make sure I do the right thing so please advise
Thanks!

ANSWER: Hello Jose!
The first night he did well is because he didn't exactly know what all was going on, and probably though he was getting out any minute. He was probably scared and didn't want to be around anyone. Now that you have been with him a day his has accepted the fact that you are his friend, protector, and onwner. What it sounds like is that Myles has some anxiety. Since he has gotten semi close to you he wants to be around you. He has never slept in a crate (probably) and is quite scared and lonly which leads to anxiety. What the VET said is right, but it feels unethical, and breaks your heart a little. Before you put Myles in his crate play with him a bunch and let him run and play. Give him a snack wheather it be a treat or a small portion of his food, and give him some water. Put some of his toys, or a bone in the kennel. Also try putting something that has your scent on it in his cage. It could be a old shirt or sock. Just something that will remind him of you. Keep a light on preferable a night light. This next thing sounds odd, but trust me it works. Buy air freshener that is the lavender scent. It sooths and helps animals and humans sleep and takes added stress off. Or it can be the glade plug ins. I use those and the freshener and my beagle stays ver VERY calm when its bedtime and time for me to leave. There is also a product on Dr. Foster and Smith's website that you may want to look into. I will add the link at the end. My Father is a Veternarian and he uses everything lavender in his clinic to soothe the animals. Try getting him very tired before he goes to bed, let him play. When he gets older, he will be trained and won't have to use the crate for sleep. I never used a crate for my beagle, because I was afraid of her getting anxiety from being alone at night. I don't know if that is a option for you. But if you can buy him a bed and put it in your room where you sleep with some noise going like a television or radio it will go smoother. They learn quick, not to mess with anything. If you need anymore help then please don't hesitate to ask. Good luck and I hope for the best.

P.S Here is the link for the comfort zone plug in this is a very good item.

QUESTION: Thanks for the Advice, Last night i put his crate across from my bed and we only woke up to go potty outside.  I had to squirt him once but I think that he is understanding its his bed.  I try to make sure that he is not in his crate unless its time for sleep.  My next question, does he anixety affect why he barks when I put him outside and come inside?  Shouldnt he just want to play?  I will look into the Lavender smell device
Thanks!!

ANSWER: Hello Again!
Yes perhaps his bark would change when you bring him inside. All dogs are different. If he was playing and his heart rate was up, and he was having fun. Then yes he could be agitated that you brought him inside. Yes, he probably would want to play. But if you have changed his schedule of when he goes and plays, he could be tired and want to come inside. Just get him on a sharp and distinct schedule for what is play time and what is bedtime, so on and so on. That should make it clear to him that he isn't dominating and he will keep a schedule. Definatly look into lavender. Actually right before I started to answer your question I sprayed glade lavender air freshener, haha! I hope everything works out and again if you need anymore assistance don't hesitate to ask!

QUESTION: Thanks for the Advice, If I choose to Leave him outside all day, now granted he would have food and water and a House as well, if he started to bark would i be correct in assuming that he would stop and realize no one is coming? The reason i ask is that I have a roommate who works Graveyard and i don't want the puppy keeping him up all day.  Its either all day outside or sectioned off in the restroom or laundry room, i figured he would prefer outside but not sure which is best

Thanks!!

Answer
Hello!
It is not healthy to leave a puppy in a restroom or laundry room all day. It will give anxiety and he will start with aggression. I would take him outside. No, it takes a while for dogs to relize that no one is coming when they are outside. So you will have to work with him on that for a couple of days. You need to come and check on him during the day. It is better to leave him outside, but you aren't really supposed to leave him in one place all day. Just make sure he has all the things you listed. Good luck and I hope for the best.
