Beagel - Whining & Car Sickness

Question
Hi
I got my Beagle at 8 weeks old and he is now 8 months old.  He has completed obedience training and done beginners agility.  He was also castrated at 6 months old.  He is virtually house trained, apart from the occasional wee, but other than that we were in a great routine with him until the other night, when I woke to him whining and walking around downstairs.  So I went downstairs as he never did this before and found a wet patch on the floor, I left the door openend whilst I cleaned up but he refused to go outside, so I locked up and went back to bed and it was around 2 in the morning.  He continued to whine all night and ignored him, anyway he has done this now again for the last few nights, I don't know why I has begun to do this.  Can you help?  Also for the last couple of months when I put him in the car he drools and drools where it soaks the car and now he refuses to walk in and I have to carry him into the car and he looks so unhappy, I have put his blanket, his toys a bone etc in, but he still refuses to get in.  Any suggestion.  Thanks

Answer
Hi thanks for writing. So as far as the accidents at night it sounds like he may have gotten scared by something. Don't give in and remember to take him out before bed as well as limit his water intake for a couple hours before bedtime. You could try playing a radio with some soft music and see if that helps.

The car situation sounds like he gets car sick, excessive drooling isnt really a typical thing, and it sometimes comes before vomiting. He may just not be quite sick enough to vomit but still is nauseous. His reluctance to get in would say that he either doesnt like it and knows he wont feel well or something else in the car upsets him, perhaps the heat?

Hopefully he is never left in the car ever without you there even for only a oouple minutes. the inside temperature of a car without air flowing can easily quadruple within a very short period and cracking a windown is not enough. Many dogs get heat prostration if they are lucky enough to not die from it.... it can happen very quickly. Dogs do not and cannot perspire like we do, the only way that heat escapes their bodies is thru the skin on the bottoms of their paws, a very small area for a quickly heating body. Prior to passing out from heat prostration a dog would most likely drool so hopefully drool so hopefully this isnt what has been happening.

If you have never left your dog in the car and it isnt that he is too hot even with you in the car you might want to check with your vet, as I said excessive drooling for a beagle is not typical and could be a sign of something else or if it is car sickness they can give you something to give him before he goes in the car.
