Beagle Arrroooing and Pulling

Question
Hi...I was surprised to go through all the questions in the beagle forum and there weren't any questions asked about overexcited beagles on leashes.

I have a 4 year old female beagle.  She pulls on the leash.  WE have been using the easy walk harness. I know the harness only prevents pulling, not stops it.  Here's our problem...when we are walking and she sees another dog, she goes nuts.  It's not aggressive, but she barks her head off and pulls really hard.  I have to admit...it's quite embarrassing.

I honestly think it is excitement.  When she gets the opportunity to meet the other dog, she is happy and wagging her tail.  I just feel this is really a challenge.  I'm in a beagle group and out of 10 other beagles reporting the same problem, no one was able to cure it by getting their beagle under control.

We start basic obedience training (two years overdue) tonight and we are hoping there is HOPE to get it under control.

Answer
Hello Sarah!
There is nothing wrong with overdue training. Better late than never. My beagle just finished obedience training, she is one and a half. Yeah, I don't get a lot of questions on the excited beagle. Alot of this problem will be fixed with training. There is a leash you can buy that works very well I might say. I hate the name of it, but it taught my beagle not to pull and to this day I don't have that problem. Again I hate the name, the choker leash. It is a mear leash that wraps around their neck and when they get over excited it tugs their neck and obviously they don't like it and it teaches them to stop. From that point on if she sees a new friend say NO! firmly and point the index finger at her. Yes it can be embarrassing, but people should/will understand you are training her. When she is taught heal that will fix part of the problem. Be very patient with her because a beagle is the hardest dog to train. The choker leash will really help with the pulling and barking. I know what you are going through, my beagle had this phase and I used the choker leash for about 3 months and she was over it. If you have a SPCA they usually use the choker leash to train the dogs that come in so I would check their. Well, I hope I have helped. Like I said training is going to help this a lot. Good luck and if you need anything else answered please don't hesitate to ask!
