Behavorial problems - excessive barking on walks

Question
We have a rescue dog, half beagle and half Boston terrier.  Toby starts to bark as soon as he sees the leash and does not stop until we return to the house from our walk.  He also lunges and pulls during the entire walk.  His bark is so loud and high-pitched that all our neighbors come out of their homes to see what is going on and put their hands over their ears.  He is uncontrollable on these walks, barking incessantly, lunging and pulling and nipping at our other dog, a wire fox terrier. Although I know that dogs need exercise, we have come to dread these walks.  What can we do?  He is a very sweet dog, but we are afraid to disturb our neighbors so we don't walk him or our other dog as much as we would like to.

Answer
Hello!
It sounds like the only thing that is going to help you is to get Tody some obedience training. He has gotten used to this routine and its not all his fault, dogs love their walks. Until you can get him into some classes when he barks and things that bother you an the neighbors, I want you to say NO firmly and point your index finger in his snout. He will learn he is doing something wrong. As well as praise him when he does something good such as not barking and pulling. Also try giving him maybe one or two more walks a day he probably loves them so much that he looks so forward to them much like a small child on its birthday. By giving Toby more walks it will tire him out and he will lose some of that dog charm in his excitement to go on his walk. I would suggest going to Petsmart for training, it is very affordable, fun, and very education to your dog. Some SPCAs do it so try look at yours. You have to make a quick decision so your neighbors don't get to irritated. Try getting a treat out when he keeps barking and if he stops proceed to give him the treat. He has just gotten used to barking an pulling a nipping that in his mind he isn't doing anything wrong. Good luck and if you have any more questions please don't hesitate to ask.
