Beagles eating habits

My beagle eats any food within his reach including candy and snacks.  The only food he won't eat is raw vegetables. I can't control his appetite. He knows how to push chairs to the counter to get on it, open cabinet doors (without any handles)He has even gotten a pot off the stove. It is unbelievable what he can do. He was 53 lbs and he eats a can of green beans in the a.m. and a can of green beans and 1/2 cup of IAMS lowfat dry in the evening. After 15 mos he is down to 34 lbs and looks great.  He also eats cloth that has touched my husbands face and this is uncontrollable.  He has eaten many t shirts, pillowcases, sheets and comforters.  He actually eats large amounts of the cloth.  I don't know how to stop this.  He is 3 1/2 yrs old.  I am at my wits end.

Simply baby proof your kitchen. Buy the locks that go in on cabinets so he will not open them. For things that are on the counter, buy stainless steel canisters, it is hard for a beagle to smell through stainless steel. A beagles smell is 50 times stronger than any other dog. So that is why he can find everything. Also beagles are genetically overweight dogs so it is easy for them to get overweight. I'm glad you got him down to a good steady weight that is important, you should feel good that you go him down. About the eating of cloths. Make sure that it should be classified as eating instead of it maybe being chewing, playing with, or just being hard to deal with. Try keeping all clothes out of reach for him. The chances are he is just playing and chewing. Buy him rawhide bones and squeaky toys that will keep him intent that he won't think about shirts and food. Also try looking into science diet food. The chances are he is still getting over his weight change and he is still hungry from going to alot to 1/2 a cup. Science diet has a lot of good nutrients that will keep him full for a while, and it gives the same effect as green beans in fact you can still give him the green beans with science diet.
