detached retina

Question
hi - I just got back from a follow up visit for an injury my cat sustained sometime within the past week (he was missing; found him Sunday)

I took him to the ER Sunday - diagnosed with detached retina - f/u visit today (total waste of time) the "vet" told me that he had a detached retina.

he couldn't answer any of my questions - anyway - is there any special diet that you know of to help him re-coop from his injury - I know it won't fix his eye, of course - I just want to do anything I can for him...he's a year old btw.

thank you

Answer
Hi Mary.  Sorry to hear of your poor kitty's injury!

A good diet is certainly something that can be helpful when a kitty is recovering from an illness or injury, but there isn't a diet specifically geared toward healing.  But those which contain first quality ingredients, no artificial preservatives, and very little in the way of fillers can support the immune system to help heal the body.  The body absorbs just what it needs from these foods to fuel the immune system, without having to worry about filtering out so much junk.

I personally prefer to feed cats canned food.  It's better for hydration, kidney health, causes fewer urinary tract problems, and satisfies the cat's hunger longer.  Whether you use canned or dry, I recommend Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul over all others.  Another excellent brand is Wellness, and then I like ProPlan alright.

Adding in a multi-vitamin to your cat's could also help.  Vitamin B is especially good for healing damaged tissues.  You can find vitamins for cats at pet stores or vet offices.
