Can Cats miss their owners?

16:33:08

Question
We went on a two week vacation and left our two cats with my sister-in-law who took care of them very well. However, one female has lost about 1 1/2 pounds in weight. When we got back the cats were more affectionate than usual. Is it possible that they missed and pined for us while we were away?

Answer
Absolutely!  Cats are very similar emotionally to humans, which is a big reason why we get along with them so well.  In fact, an adult cat has the emotional maturity of about a two-year-old child.  So depression associated with your absence could definitely be the cause of the weight loss.  However, do keep a good eye on her.  If other symptoms develop, like lack of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, etc., then she should see a vet.
