cat meowing ALL the time

Question
Hi Norman.
I hope you can answer my question!  My friend and his 2 siamese cats just moved in with me.  He had to leave on a business trip a couple days after the move, which is pretty normal for him.  The cats are used to being on their own.  Doozer is a 2 yr old male and the other cat is a 6 month old female.  Doozer will not stop wailing at night. He paces around the house crying.  This is not something that he did before the move.  Just ignoring him is not really an option, because I have another roommate who gets grumpy with no sleep.  Plus that cry is heart wrenching.  I've tried the spray bottle thing.  I leave my door open at night so they can sleep in my room.  They don't like being locked in the room and I don't want to lock them out at night.  He does the same thing during the day when there is motion in the house.  He'll be sitting with me on the couch, my roommate will come home or go out and then he runs upstairs, sits on my bed and cries.  I guess with all this rambling, I'd like to know how to get a quiet nights sleep.  I hope I provided enough info.
Anxiously waiting a response.

Answer
Shaunna,

I am assuming both are neutered/spayed?  If not, they need to be.

Siamese as a breed are well known for being vocal and have the most raucous meows in all of catdom.

There are a couple of things that may be happening here.  If the 6 month old is not spayed, she may be coming into season and the male, although he may be neutered is responding.

More likely is that Siamese are the most affectionate of breeds.  Between the moving (very high stress level for cats) and the business trips, I think you are seeing some separattion anxiety exacerbated by moving into new digs!!!!!

Frankly, you are doing all you can.  I am not being facetious, but have you tried ear plugs?

I expect that as time goes by, and the owner is around more, the cats will become more settled.

By the way, the spray bottle thing is highly over rated as a discipline device for cats.
