Delivery of Kittens

Question
QUESTION: My cat delivered her 1st kitten at 12:am last night, but I had to help her.  The kitten butt and tail was the only thing that would come out after an hour of her trying to deliver.  I helped pull out his back legs & then she could deliver a very large kitten.  Then about 30 - 40 min later she tired to deliver another one at 1:30am only a round bubble -looked like the sack would come out. (I went to bed) This morning at 7:30am their was no more kittens only the one. She was so big I just Knew she was going to have 2 or 3 at least. This is her 2nd set of kittens - the first time she only had one-that we could tell. should I be conserned about her - she is nursing the one kitten.

ANSWER: Christal,

Something sounds as if it may be amiss.  I would take her to your vet to see if there are still kittens left inside and whether they are alive.  He can try to induce labor and, if that does not work, he might look at doing a C-section.  The problem is that if anything is left behind, it will fester in her uterus and end up making her septic. It is also what you saw may have been a placenta?  If she delivered it through the night, she may have eaten it.

I have also seen queens deliver one horn of the uterus, wait 24-48 hours and deliver the next horn.

You can take her kitten with if you like, but they should be in separate carries (I like a shoe box with some bedding for the kitten).  It is mostly important that the kitten stay warm.

I have seen cats look as big as a house and still deliver only one kitten.

Please let me know what happens.

Best regards... Norm.

QUESTION: Thanks, for the quik answer. I called my vet and he told me what to do to see if any other kittens were still inside her. You could feel them so I took her and the new kitten to the vet and there is still at least one more very large kitten laying across. The Vet said that even if it got straight in the birth canal it's so large that she would not be able to have it. So were doing a C-section as I type this to you - hopefully they are still alive. He wanted to keep the 1st kitten (boy) with her.  I'll call after 2:00pm today and check on the progress of her.

Answer
Christal,

I hope all goes well.  I had a suspicion that might be the case, but as I am not a vet, I do not like to speculate.

Here is hoping he is able to get that kitten out and revive it.

Please let me know!!!!!!!!!!

Hopeful regards... Norm.
