Cat pulling out her fur

Question
I have a pure white cat, who is about 4 years old. She has had kittens, and was then spayed. Before she had the kittens, she suckled her tail. It was very annoying, but I put it down to cat-neurosis. After the birth of her kittens, she stopped suckling her tail.
However, she started pulling the fur out of her lower back. Slowly but surely she's balding further up her spine. It's now getting worse; she's started pulling at her son's fur while grooming him. The vet said that it was probably also a neurosis, and that he would probably recommend putting her onto anti-depressants. I cannot believe that this is the only solution. Perhaps a dietary change, or something that I'm missing.

Answer
Hi Lindsay.  I'd make the suggestion of a dietary change before starting kitty prozac.  How old is her son?  If he is still nursing, then make sure mom is on kitten food - because she will be needing the nutrients that are in the kitten food.

Definitely go with a diet change first... make sure that you do it gradually so there's no issues with mom's tummy.  Hope that works for you!

Good luck!
