Question
My 3 1/2 old kitten Valentines got sick quit eating and drinking and her belly was full of air like a balloon. I took her to a vet and they did a FIV Test blood work and surgery on her to see what causing this.and x-rays. nothing in 2 x-rays surgery nothing blocking the intestines. Just a belly full like a balloon of gas. The vet sowed her up, and now every in awhile she takes in to much air through her mouth. her belly is back to being a balloon. Valentines is eating and drinking water she's still has air. in her belly. she will blow some out. burp a little but still filling with air she eats drinks and poops I have not herd her fart. she won't fart. how can I get her to fart? I have rubbed her tummy stoked her back. Nothing. I'm going to have her checked for worms this kitten has cost me 414.00 so far plus a visit coming up. could you tell me all the things that causes this?  I going nuts and afraid she might die of to much gas in her belly it seems to be more on her left side. but is as big as a balloon and she has bony legs. she looked healthy when I bought her for 40.00 then in a few days bam all of this happened. can you help? the vet don't know what wrong and why this is haping I'm beginning to wonder about the vet. can you give any suggestions?
Thank you Melisa

Answer
Hi Melisa,

What you describe sounds most like worms but I would assume your vet would have checked for that.  If you haven't already, provide your vet with a fresh stool sample so he can check for worms and treat them appropriately.  Did he put her on any medications?  Usually they will give you an intestinal antibiotic for something like this.  The other thing it might be, although I would think your vet would have seen this during surgery, is FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) where the belly fills up with fluid.  There's no accurate test for this as the virus that causes it is a Corona virus and if your kitty has any of the Corona viruses it will show up positive.  I would have expected your vet to see this fluid in the belly when he did surgery though.  Go ahead and go back to the vet and if you're still not satisfied get another opinion.
