Question
I have a 9-month old spayed female brown/black mottled tabby and appears to have some oriental mixed in.  She was spayed at 16 weeks, and it took a long time for the hair in that area to grow back.  The area also became "paunchy".  When the hair did grow back in it came in a different color (white/tan mix) and much longer than the rest of her, which is short-haired.  When she walks this paunchy hair-covered area sways, and she seems to have a little bit of a sway back at times.  Otherwise, she does not appear overweight (she weighs 9 lbs. at 9 months).  Is she normal?  Is she overweight?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Linda,

Some cats do have that "pouch", especially after being spayed.  It's fairly normal.  It is hard for me to determine if she is overweight because I don't know how large her frame is.  9lbs for a female seems a little heavy, but not abnormal.  Don't cut her food back though, she will even out eventually.  Don't feed her from the table, free feed dry food, but use canned food sparingly.
I would say she is pretty normal.  I have Ocicats, who have the pouch....  It's just the genes that give them this, there is not a whole lot you can do about it.  Please write again if I can be of further help.  Hugs, Barb
