Dog and Cat

Question
My uncle asked my family and I to babysit his 2 year old basset hound while he was in between houses.  That was about 2 months ago, and last week he asked us to just keep her.  I am totally in love with this dog and am thrilled to have her.

The only problem is that I also have a 13 year old Russian blue cat, who is pretty territorial.  The dog always wants to sniff him and play with him, and he won't put up with any of it.  He has scratched her nose a few times already.

I love the dog, but my cat is my baby.  Like I said, he's pretty old and set in his ways, and I don't want to make the last stage of his life miserable for him.  If there is any way for me to keep the dog and have my cat be happy, I would gladly do it.  Do you have any suggestions for me as to how I should make my cat more comfortable with a new dog?  Do you think they'll just get used to each other?

Thanks sooooooooooooooo much!

Answer
I think it will just take awhile for them to get used to each other. I have seven cats and just got a new puppy and all the cats but one has gotton used to the puppy. If the cat has scratched the dog then the dog should get the idea pretty soon to not mess with the cat.
