Question
Hi Becky
Its me again.  We adopted out two new kittens today from the local animal shelter.  We just brought them home today.  They are about 3 months old and were litter trained at the shelter.  We are having trouble already getting them to use the litterbox (one has pooped on the floor and it was pretty runny, the vet said that might be expected from the de-worming) and they have not eaten anything.  They both had a checkup bu a local vet and found they had earmites and worms which they were both treated for. They also got tested for feline leukemia (negative and their first round of shots. They said other than that they are in good health.  We have to take them back in a few weeks for round two of shots. I have noticed that our little orange and white one has sneezed a couple times.  Should I be concerned.  Also I put food out for them and neither one has eaten.  I put out Purina One Kitten Chow...is this good?  Is the reason they haven't eaten is that they are still adjusting to their new home?  Are these normal behaviors to a cat being in a new home for the first day or am I just being an overly concerned mom!!:)
Thanks!

Answer
Hi again Lisa!
I think it's perfectly normal for them to be a little scared and not wanting to eat on their first day to their new home.  They have been through a lot, and cats really do not like change. As far as using the litter box goes, I would keep them confined to the room with the litter box until they know where it is and use it.  If it's in your bathroom, you may not be able to do that for all day, but you could keep them in there for a few hours. (make sure toilet lid is down!)  They should become quite efficient at using the litter box before you know it. Keep it clean as some cats won't use a dirty box.  It will also keep the smells down in your home.  I think if I were you, I would relax this first day and let them get used to their new home. I bet they will eat tomorrow.  Purina ONE is a good food, but for kittens I usually supplement some canned food and even a bit of cottage cheese.  You can wean them off the canned food later, but little kittens need a bit more.   Mix the dry food with about a tablespoon of cottage cheese and a little canned. I bet they will eat it!

God Bless,
Becky
