Pregnant Cat & Still Nursing 1st litter

Question
I am only a Foster Cat Mom that got more then she bargained for !!  Would like for her first litter to be weaned by Mom naturally since I'd like them to be very social & secure kitties.  I have been doing probably too much research and now I am confused.  One site says that I should take the kitties back to the shelter for Mom to have a quiet birthing experience.  I think she might become frantic when her babies are all gone at once before birth & would like to wait till she gives birth.  But if all 6 babies and Mom are together when Mom gives birth again, is there anything @ all that I need to concern myself with? ie: kitties getting in with babies, Mom getting upset with kitties while giving birth etc. etc.  I would like to be there but when nature calls......  What do you think I should do?  I trust she will give birth in a week or two.  I got them from the shelter Oct 10th and the kittens were about 5 wks. old by then.

Answer
Christiane,

First of all, why don't you have the mom spayed????????

Secondly, kittens really should be weaned by 6 weeks for the sake of their immune systems (long complicated explanation).  Some queens will naturally wean the kittens and some will let them nurse forever.  So you are going to have to do the weaning.

The current 6 kittens will hog the nipples and not allow the newborns to nurse, so the imminent litter may very well be a catastrophe.  So, wean the older kittens and remove them to a part of the house where mama will not be able to hear them readily.  Make sure the mama is in a quiet draft free place with no other cats around to distract her from the business at hand.  The mama will need at least a week to get used to her surroundings and whatever birthing box you provide.

Best regards... Norm.
