Question
I have a cat we just recently gave away her last kitten. they weren't quiet weaned yet but where using the litter box and eating dry food just fine. The problem is now after they have been gone five days All of her teats are swollen and red.  She moves around just fine eats and drinks as normal. I can tell that she is in pain. I've looked up Mastitis and she not showing very many of those symptoms.   This is her fist litter she is about 1.5 years old . Is this something normal that happens when kittens haven't been weaned properly or something i should take her in for?
Thanks kamie

Answer
Hi Kamie, this has happened because she was still nursing the kittens and producing milk and then all of a sudden the kittens are gone and she has  all this milk and no one to relieve her of it. In the future, remove the kittens one at a time from mom and this won't be such a problem. Now you need to help her a bit. I would recommend a warm bath and then lightly massage her so that some of the milk can be expressed. You do not want to encourage  her by over massaging to produce MORE MILK.. so take it easy. But if you give her a warm bath twice a day and do not feed her canned food or anything with liquid in it then she will eventually dry up and not be so uncomfortable. Just leave out water for her and dry food until this is resolved.
