How do i get my kittens to be friends?

Question
Hi, me and my family adopted a 4month old female kitten, her name is Faith, she was doing fine, the day after we adopted her my mums bf found a kitten at work, the people told him they were just going to shoot it, so he brang her home, its also a girl, we named her Hope, she is identical to Faith in colours, markings and size so we think she is around the same age, Hope is timid but very affectionate towards everyone in our family and talks alot lol, but everytime Faith and Hope see each other Faith hisses and Hope will spit and hiss, it hasn't become physical because they both always walk away, they slept in the laundry together last night and there were no fights but there was some hissing for a while, Faith was only here for a day before Hope came they have only had one night together and today is there 2nd day together, they dont seem to be improving, it seems like they avoid each other, will it just take time, we also eventually want them to meet our dogs they have seen them through the doors and just hiss and run so if you have any advice on when and how to do that to we would really appreciate it. Thanks

Answer
Hi Domaneca,

Actually it sounds like your two kitties are doing just fine, believe it or not!  For only being together one night (and I assume never having known each other before) they seem to be doing okay, they're hissing as a bluff, kind of like saying "you better not mess with me, I'll kick your butt!" but the fact that they walk away from each other after an encounter means that neither one wants to start anything.  And I like that the slept in the same room together and didn't fight, I think they're going to get along just fine.  As for the dogs the kittens are probably just a little intimidated right now and I would wait until they have adjusted to each other and their new surroundings before introducing them.  Don't force it, if they seem really scared then take the dogs out and try again later (I assume your dogs are "cat friendly" but you still want to monitor them, even gentle dogs can hurt a little kitten without meaning to).  Get some cat toys and some catnip, and play with the kittens separately but in the same room.  The catnip actually calms them down after the initial euphoria and you can "accidently" throw one kittens toy towards the other and see if they'll play together.  There's bound to be some more hissing for a few more days but since they're similar in age and neither one seems to be aggressive I think you'll have two bff's in no time!
