Question
I HAVE A 3 YR. OLD SHORTHAIR FEMALE (SPAYED) HOUSE CAT THAT HAS PROBLEMS WITH CONSTIPATION. I HAVE HER ON A HIGH FIBER DIET BUT IT DOESN'T SEEM TO HELP, SHE CONTINUES TO GET VERY CONSTIPATED.  SHE HAS VERY LARGE AND HARD STOOLS AND SEEMS TO HAVE PROBLEMS PASSING THEM. I HAD HER TO VET ABOUT A MONTH AGO AND THEY HAD TO GIVE HER AN ENEMA BUT IT IS STARTING TO HAPPEN AGAIN.  WHAT CAN I DO????

Answer
I don't know what sort of food you are feeding her..but the hairball and indoor formulas tend to be higher in fiber with as much as 9% on the label.

Some cats will eat canned pumpkin - this is a very good source of fiber.

You could give her mineral oil to help lubricate the stools and ask your vet how much he wants her to take

white petroleum jelly (aka vaseline) also works 1/2 tsp
twice a week  if she won't take it she will lick it off of her paw

Make sure she is drinking plenty of water. Cats tend not to drink as much as they should. You can leave the faucet in the sink or bath tub drip very lightly ...running water attracts cats to drink thats why they sell drinking fountains for cats....but those are very challenging to keep clean but if you are up to it you could buy one of those
You can also feed her canned food since it has 80ish% water..tuna juice...

also have about two 10 min play sessions with her to keep her active

If this continues and you've tried everything, ask your vet if she needs to be on a prescription laxative.

DO NOT let her go too long without any bowel movement--call the vet ASAP
That is dangerous and the vet will literally have to dig it out
