Scratching at the door posts

Question
How can I get my cats to quit scratching at the door posts?  I tried to put up carpet, but they just don't seem interested in that.  I even bought them a claw post, but they don't even go near that.  What can I do?  Help!

Answer
Dave,

I would be inclined to suggest that you purchase a very sturdy post that is made of a material called sisal. Sisal is rough rope like material that most cats love to sharpen on. It is important for you to know that the sharpening isn't actually being done to sharpen claws, there are scent glands located in cat's paws that enable them to leave an "I was here" message by sharpening, plus the stretch feels good. When you buy this post that I have described make it fun for your cat, put bits of his food around it, put some catnip on it and even play with him around it. The reason that I am suggesting that it be extremely sturdy is because if it topples over onto your cat when he is trying to use it he will quickly associate scratching posts with fear and decide that they are not worth the effort. Hopefully this answers your question. If you have any further questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me again.
