i have a 2 cat amily male and female,my female just gave birht today 3/1/06,is it safe to let the male cat around her and the babies or should i keep the sep.will he try to harm them is what i want to know.

Answer
Kimberly, congrats on your babies!

Whether your male will be okay with the babies depends on a lot of things.  If he's the father, he's not likely to harm them.  If he's neutered, he's not likely to harm them.  However, if he is not neutered and he is not the father, there is a bigger chance he'll kill them.  That's because it's in a tomcat's nature to want to create his own offspring.  And if he kills a nursing mother's kittens, she'll go back into heat.

But there is the potential in any situation that a cat may harm the babies of another cat for no known reason.  And some mothers get very aggressive with other cats when they have kittens.  So you need to very carefully monitor their interaction, and keep them separated when you can't supervise closely.  Also, if the male goes outdoors, I would not allow him near the kittens or mama at all until the kittens are fully vaccinated at 8-12 weeks.  This is because he's likely to bring in disease, which can kill kittens easily.

Also, if the male is not neutered, you should keep him away from the mama until she's spayed.  She could get pregnant again as soon as tomorrow!  That would be dangerous to her health, the health of her kittens and to the developing fetuses.
