Question
According Canadian law how many cats are allowed to be brought from abroad and kept.
My wife and I are emigrating to Canada and we are taking our three cats with us. I have heard that only two pets are alowed to be kept in Canada. How can we take our three cats with us without braking the law? Thank you for your help from us and our cats.

Answer
Hello Sergey.  I believe it is that only two kittens who have not been vaccinated due to their young age may enter Canada.  However, if the animals are up to date on shots and are healthy, any number may enter.  They must be accompanied by a certification by a vet, stating the cat's description, and certifying that the cat is vaccinated and disease-free.  The certification must have been made within 30 days before your entry into Canada.

I have taken the following from http://gocanada.about.com/cs/bordercrossing/f/catsfromoversea.htm?terms=month+pr...

"Cats may enter Canada if accompanied by a valid rabies vaccination certificate issued, in either English or French, by a licensed veterinarian, which clearly identifies the cats and shows that they are currently vaccinated against rabies. This certificate should identify the animal, as in breed, colour, weight, etc., plus indicate the name of the licensed rabies vaccine used (trade name), serial number and duration of validity (up to 3 years). Please note that if a validity date does not appear on the certificate, then it will be considered a one-year vaccine.

If you do not have the rabies certificate, an inspector will order the owner to have the animals vaccinated for rabies and to provide the vaccination certificate to an inspector, all at the owner's expense.

Fees
Fees are payable for inspection of cats being imported into Canada from countries other than the United States. In certain cases, cats imported from the United States will require inspection; inspection fees will apply. Upon arrival at the first port of entry in Canada, the cat and the accompanying paperwork will be inspected. The fee must be paid at the time of inspection.
The current fees are:

$30.00 + tax for the first animal in the shipment and
$5.00 + tax for each additional animal in the shipment
If you choose to have a cat vaccinated upon arrival in Canada, the following fees apply:
$55.00 + tax for the first animal in the shipment and
$30.00 + tax for each additional animal in the shipment."

"To bring your dog or cat into Canada, you will be required to present Canada Customs with a valid Rabies Certificate. The vaccination date must be not less than 30 days earlier and not more than three years earlier. For information on importation of other pets, contact Canada Customs at(800) 461-9999. Good luck with your move!
