Male kitten intimidating older, larger male cat

Question
Hi, we have had two Maine Coons for the last two years. One is a big gentle boy, the other a not-so-gentle female.
Recently we succumbed to the temptation to get another male kitten. It was OK at first but now the kitten, who at 5mths old is totally without fear, has intimidated the boy, Spook, to the extent that the stupid big oaf [who is twice the size of the kitten, Wolfie] is staying away from home longer and longer and is apparently quite scared of the kitten.
Spook is such a lovely cat that I feel awful at having put him in this situation [the female just hits the kitten when he bothers her but even she's very wary of him]. I really don't want Spook to just not come back one day because he's scared of Wolfie.
I'm tempted to have Wolfie neutered a little early in an effort to calm him down but I'm not sure that it'll even work [and he's very sweet if slightly manic boy himself].
What do I do to resolve the situation?

Answer
Paul,

By all means. have Wolfie neutered.  He is old enough and it should curb some of his aggression.  When you have this done, it will take a few weeks (no more than 6 weeks) to have all of his over active male hormones die down.

This is your best bet.  The problem with cat inter-relationships is that we do not understand them.  Even worse, any human interference will be counter productive and tend to make matters worse.

So, you will have to see how he is a couple of weeks after neutering and go on from there.  Meanwhile, whenever you play with Wolfie, make sure you give extra attention and treats to your established cats as cats do get jealous.

If everyone is using the litter pans (for 3 cats, I hope you have 2 litter pans) and eating normally, things may not be so bad as they seem.

Please let me know how things go.

Best regards... Norm.
