Question

Sara 14 year old femal
My 14 year old feline wants to eats Fancy Feast 5 times a day and nibbles on hard food in between.  I tried not giving her soft food but, her meowing drives me right up a wall until I give her the soft food.  She's a Tabby and weighs about 11#

Answer
Nancy,

At a glance your tabby doesn't seem to be overweight. Have you had her to the vet to discuss the huge appetite? Changes in a cat's appetite can sometimes signal medical issues which must be dealt with quickly for the best results. You could also try feeding a premium soft food and make it one can a day, whether that is two or three meals is up to you. It sounds to me like Sara has you very well trained if her issue is not medical in origin. It may be time, if your vet agrees to put down your foot and ignore the starving kitty routine. If you feed a premium canned food and kibble you may find that Sara eats less because the nutrients are more readily available from higher quality ingredients. If you switch to a new food I advise that you start off by mixing the old food and the new food half and half gradually lessening the old food and increasing the new food until she is eating only the new food. That should take a week or two depending on how stubborn Sara is. I would also like to tell you that in feeding a higher quality food you will be using less kitty litter and seeing your vet for health problems less frequently. I have always thought that I had two choices, spend the money on food and have a healthy animal or spend the money at the vet's office and have a miserable unhealthy animal. 11 pounds (I'm guessing that's how much Sara weighs) is about average for an adult cat. If she is not spayed you may want to consider doing that as soon as you can to try to avoid things like infections in her reproductive system and tumors on her breasts. Spaying young is preventative, but it is never too late to try to prevent some of these illnesses. As for the starving kitty routine I would ignore her once you know that she is fed, start a routine of feeding her after you have your coffee and shower in the morning, if you are home at lunch she may eat after you are finished and then you could feed her after supper. Ignore her crying, begging and manipulating behavior, as I said you should be training her, stop allowing her to train you. Put her behind a closed door in another part of the house with her food, water and litter, DO NOT reward her by feeding her every time she cries. Only feed her the soft food when she is quiet and has been for several minutes. Don't worry she does have kibble to munch on so she won't die of starvation contrary to her pleas if she is too obnoxious. Cats are really quite trainable, so one or two missed meals of soft food may be all that it takes to have her pipe down. It is a hard habit to break and you end up creating a kitty slave whose master is rude and ill tempered. Do the both of you a favor and nip that in the bud before it gets any worse. Good luck. Please do not hesitate to contact me with further questions or concerns or even just to let me know how Sara is coming along.
