cat that urinates and what to do

Question
QUESTION: hello norman i called u on the phone about 1 yr ago and i enjoyed talking to u. can u tell me what u would do about my 4 yr old male russian blue cat with the bad temper that has taken to uriniating around the apartment lately and that has also started to mistreat my other cat the 6 yr old abyssinian with a heart of gold who i would give my right arm for. i am stongly conidering giving him to a no kill shelter if i can find an acceptable one but i know that it might really take its toll on me but i have had some seriosu health issues that this isituation is making worse and i am afraid to find out what kind of damage he will do nexdt. who knows how many other times he he has done this but i caught him red handed twice in last 10 days. and yes, i have tried feliway. thx for your time.

ANSWER: Ed,

Is this sudden or has it been going on a while?  If it started rather suddenly, I would suspect a health issue with the Russian Blue.  However, there are some cats that just seem to snap and become less and less predictable, so if there is not a urinary tract problem, this cat may have a major mental problem. In the latter case, a no kill shelter may work, but he would have to go to a home with no other cats.

Let me know what happens.

Good luck and best regards... Norm.

QUESTION: hi norman. thx for answering. no there i no health problem. he is as strog as an ox and healthy as a horse. its a major behavioral problem i cant resolve. impossible. so after he did it 2 more times in 4 more days, i talked to some good friends that run a cat sitting service and we now have him in a foster home where he is awaiting adoption by a couple with no cats in their late 40s who had a cat die about 1 yr ago. i feel this would be a dream come true as boris needs to be the boss--king of the hill as he is very territorial. now if his bad temper could just subside a little but i think this could work for him. he is really a lovable little guy who i care about and miss very much after just 2 days. i just wish he wouldnt do this but he needs a new environemnt and arthur comes first. thx for listening. comment if u like.

Answer
Ed,

If this works and is best for the cat, it is the right thing to do.

It sounds as if Boris needs to be the only cat and, this could have been the cause of the litter pan problems.  I always suggest the medical cause first, since, if this is the cause, it is usually easier to fix than a behavioral problem.

There is never a guarantee that, when you bring a new cat into a household, it and the others will get along.

I hope Boris works out well in his new home and I hope you now have peace in your household.

Best regards... Norm.
