mastitis?

Question
hello Becky. my cat mitsy had kittens 6 weeks ago [2nd litter] and for the last few days she has been reluctant to feed them which i found rather strange, however i put it down to that perhaps they no longer need her milk as they are feeding so well on their own. This morning i noticed that her belly seemed distorted and when i felt it, it was indeed very lumpy however she didn't seem to be in any pain. When i returned from the school run to my surprise all 6 kitts were feeding from her and as a result her belly is only a little lumpy. the area around her teats seem quite enlarged but as i said she seems to be in no pain. I am worried that this could turn into something serious e.g. mastitis and would you recommend that i take her to the vet? thanks becky. mandy.

Answer
Hi Many,
Actually, it is very normal for her to begin to stop feeding her kittens.  They should be completely on their own by 8 wks so she is doing her "job".   I am not a breeder so I am unsure of what to tell you about the mastitis.  You may want to ask a breeder that same question, or even call your Vet.
My best to you and all the kittens!!
God Bless,
Becky
