Matted paw

Our kittten has what looks like feces matted in his paw.  It's stuck on the fleshy pink areas pretty good.  I tried clipping it with scissors an got a little bit off and noticed it was raw where I removed it.  Any ideas on how to make it come off easily?

try rubbing some Vaseline on to the paw and leave it for a little while to soften the whatever it is. The with a very mild detergent like washing up liquid bathe the paw gently rubbing. If it is really hard it may take several attempts but should eventually come off.
If all else fails it may be worth taking them to a professional groomers who may have come across this problem before and have a special solvent etc.
