EMERGENCY ! mother cat not cleaning kittens

I have a cat( that is like a kitten herself)she just gave birth today.Before lunch and here it is after dark she has yet to clean the afterbirth or the cord.She had three kittens and they are all attached to their cord and after birth.She had them on the ground and there is trash and roots all tangle up in it.What should I do? I would hate to see them die cause of this.It is my 4yr old son's cat and he calls his self their grandfather and tells them stories.The mama cat follows him around like a puppy.

Hi Deborah, well you will either have to get her to a vet, or you will have to cut those cords yourself and clean up the kittens. Is she feeding them>??? You need to tie off the cords and then cut them. Use a knife or scissors that is not too sharp and cut them off about 3/4 inch from the umbilicus.If this cat is very special to your son I would recommend you have her spayed to spare him any heartbreak from the worry involved with unplanned litters.
