Saggy tummy/stomach on 8 mo. cat boy

Question
Hi! My 8 mo. old male cat who has been fixed has a saggy tummy that sways from side to side when he runs.  It looks like loose skin hanging.  He is not overweight or was overweight.  I have heard reasons from spaying to loose skin after being overweight (except he was not overweight).  My vet is requesting to see him but I do not think anything is wrong with him.  I also have heard it can just be genetics.  Do you know what could cause this?  I have seen and heard of many cats with this saggy tummy.  Thanks so much!

Answer
Sheryl,

In my experience, while it is true some cats seem to develop this, the cause in most cats has been being over weight.  Like people, cats have various body styles, so what may not seem to be obesity at one weight for one cat may be obesity for a cat with a slighter body style.

Truthfully, your vet could tell you whether your boy is overweight or not.

However, having said all that, at 8 months, it could just be baby fat as he starts to grow out of kittenhood to adulthood.

You still will always need to watch his diet and avoid free feeding.

Best regards... Norm.
