Question
QUESTION: Hi, a feral cat adopted us about 4 weeks ago, just starting to show.  I was able to get her into the garage (racoons are close by).  She delivered one kitten, the next was stillborn, then she delivered a third.  And stopped..she still appears pregnant..but I am unable to palpate due to her being feral.  The vet promises to charge be $1500 for a c-section, but I am not sure what to do.  She is taking great care of the kittens, eating and drinking, and using the litterbox.  She doesn't appear to be in trouble, but then I don't really know her, and she is very young, maybe 6-8 months old.  Anything you can help me with is appreciated.  Thanks.

ANSWER: Hi Theresa, What makes you think she has a retained kitten or afterbirth??
Usually a cat with anything retained will not be taking care of the kittens she has. They will develop a fever quite quickly and will show signs of stress and diarrhea.
When did she deliver the kittens?
Let me know more details and then I will get back to you again, Teresa

QUESTION: She delivered the kittens last Monday, so as of today they are 8 days old. I was concerned because she really didn't loose any size to her tummy after delivering.  She is doing well and doesn't seem "ill", she is a feral cat, and doesn't let us around her like she did before she delivered.  If you have any thoughts I would appreciate it.

Answer
Hi Theresa, Thanks for the email back. Most cats are still a little swollen after having their kittens. It is nothing to worry about. I am still 'swollen' since my last baby 23 years ago !! LOL
But seriously, she will still be shrinking back to normal size for another week and then you will notice her looking quite skinny because the kittens will be taking so much out of her. I am sure you have nothing to worry about and I am surprised a vet would consider a c-section a week after the delivery! Don't worry if she had retained anything she would be dead or near death by now! So, I am sure she is fine and she will be less social with you right now because she has these new babies but that will slowly start to change any day now. Just give her some time and do your best to keep her in the garage so she doesn't get out and get bred again right away. She can come into heat anytime now!
