transdermal Prozac build-up in ear

Question
Hi Mr. Auspitz, I have been treating my 14 yr. old spayed DSH with transdermal Prozac for about 4 mos. with great success.  My question is in regard to the build up of cream in her ear over time.  When I notice it getting particularly thick I scrape it out gently with my fingernail.  I don't mind doing this in view of the improvement in her health but it is kind of gross and I wonder if the build-up interferes with subsequent absorption.  Should I be doing something differently?  Is there another way to remove the build-up?  Many thanks in advance for any ideas you have.  Sincerely, Linda

Answer
Linda,

I am not a vet, but when we do transdermal medication we alternate ears and when we are medicating via the left ear, we are cleaning out the right ear with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol.  Likewise, when we are medicating via the right ear, we are cleaning out the left ear using the cotton swab dipped in alcohol.

I am surprised neither the vet nor the pharmacy gave you that tip.  Please let me know how this works for you.

Best regards... Norm.
