cat bleeding after giving birth

Question
My cat had 4 kittens 4 days ago.  Today she has started bleeding, well first time I have noticed it.  It is sero-sanguinous, very thin in viscosity, no clots present and not dark red.  Should I have a vet check her in the morning?
Thank You.

Answer
Hi Andrea.  Yes, I would probably have a vet check her out to be safe.  By this time, we usually like to see the blood starting to darken and become clotted.  This indicates that it is old blood that's continuing to drain and not that mom is continuing to bleed somewhere.  Some bloody discharge is normal for a few days after delivery, but if the appearance of fresh blood has increased, she could be bleeding abnormally, which should be addressed.
