Question
Hello.
We have a 2 years old Maine Coon that had an intussusceptum about 5 months ago. He had about 45 cm or half of his thin intestine removed in an operation that saved his life, the cause was never determined though. Ever since he had been placed by the vet on a Royal Canine "intestinal" diet. He has been regularly throwing up (every 2 weeks) and once in a while we had to place him on an iv because he was not feeling well. We had switched doctors and now he has been diagnosed with a chronic pancreatitis. He has also problems with kidneys and a liver (a lot of antibiotics that were given to him after the operation). The new vet had placed him on a diet of oatmeal and a bit of cooked vegetables like carrots and pumpkin(blended), 2 table spoons of raw meat daily morning and evening. She also prescribed Cantaris, Berberis and Traumel(all holistic) We had seen some positive dynamics for a few weeks but now the cat is again not feeling well, we also have to force feed him the oatmeal as he is obviously refusing to eat it by himself. I was wondering if there is some kind of a solution to this dilemma as he needs to get some enjoyment out of life(and there is none with force feeding). We were told that we can not give him a lot of meat as his kidneys are not in the condition to handle that much protein. He is obviously also not able to digest and get all the vitamins he needs out of the food as half of his thin intestine is cut out. I would appreciate any suggestions.
Food, supplements

Thank you in advance,
Gene

Answer
Wow, Poor cat!  Poor you, too...
I would love to help but remember I am not a vet.  So, please ask your vet to look at this home-cooking recipe....See if it is ok.

Frequent feedings of high quality simple carbohydrates such as white rice and potatos.
( if he will eat them????)
~~~normal amounts of protein should be fed as protein is needed by the liver during repair.
Try to pick low fat meats.... less fat meats
Soy protein  are helpful..
Hamburger, Drained  ( or another meat is fine)
******* ~No liver or organ meats...******
Boiled eggs without the yokes..
Unprocessed BROWN Rice..  or White rice...
mixed daily with some cottage cheese or "soy" plain yogurt.
I know this recipe it not much but most cats manage with it.
YOU will need a balanced cat vitamin 1 x per day...
I refer folks to NuVET feline - See if you can find something like the NuVET in your country.
